Demand factor

The ratio of maximum demand to the connected load is called as demand factor.

\[Demand factor=\frac{maximum\: demand}{connected\: load}\]

The maximum demand of the system is generally less than the connected load, as all the consumer may
not switch on their entire connected load at a time. So, the demand factor is generally less than one.

The knowledge of demand factor helps in determining the capacity of a power plant.

Calculating the demand factor

If a system has a connected load of 100 MW and a maximum demand of 70 MW.
Then the demand factor of the system is = 70/100 = 0.7.
